WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
by Eva Travers Poole
(roughly translated into modern English)
What are you doing, Christian?
Is it work for Christ, your Lord?
Are you winning many sinners
By your life, your pen, your word?
When the solemn question comes,
What will your answer be?
Can’t you point to something finished? –
Saying – “Lord, my work for You!”
What do you do in service? –
Are you taking active part
Is your life and tongue in earnest,
Outflow of loving heart?
Or are you idly gazing
While other toil and sow
Content with simply praising
The earnestness they show?
“What do you do, redeemed one,
Child of a mighty King?
What glory to your Father
Does your princely bearing bring?
If no one brought Him honor,
And no one gave Him praise,
To you it appertains
The pen-note to raise
“What do you do here?
Wherever your earthly lot be case
Oh let each hour moment
In gladsome work be passed!
Here! You may do a lifework;
Here! You may win a crown,
Starlit and gem-surrounded,
To cast before the throne.”
